The Sweet Smell of Summer

Today JB and I went for a bike ride along the towpath, where huge masses of honeysuckle abound and the air is as sweet as perfume.


 

The scent of honeysuckle transports me back to my early childhood, when I would join the neighborhood kids as they swarmed like bees around gargantuan honeysuckle bushes, plucking off individual blooms one by one in order to taste the sweet nectar within. We'd stand there for what seemed like an hour, plucking, pulling, and gingerly licking the single drop of "honey" from the tip of the, what, stamen? Not sure, but that sounds about right. I almost hopped off my bike to have a taste...
